Why use a Ledger hardware wallet?
Ledger hardware wallets store your private keys in a dedicated, offline device called a secure element. By signing transactions inside the device, Ledger greatly reduces the risk of remote theft by malware or phishing. While hardware wallets add strong protection, they require careful handling — especially around backing up your recovery phrase and verifying addresses on-device.
Quick takeaway: A hardware wallet strengthens security, but human mistakes (lost seed phrases, phishing) still pose the greatest risk. Follow best practices below.
What you’ll need
A Ledger device (e.g., Nano S Plus or Nano X) and its official USB cable or Bluetooth pairing method for Nano X.
A computer or mobile device with internet access.
A pen and the provided recovery sheet (or a durable metal backup solution for long-term storage).
Time and a distraction-free environment to write your recovery phrase correctly.
Step 1 — Buy from trusted sources and inspect packaging
Always buy Ledger devices from Ledger’s official store or authorized resellers. Inspect the box and tamper-evident materials. If packaging appears opened or tampered with, do not use the device; contact support or the seller.
Warning: Avoid purchasing used hardware wallets. A second-hand device may have been tampered with and can expose your funds to theft.
Step 2 — Download Ledger Live from the official site
Open your browser and type ledger.com/start manually — never follow links from unknown emails or social media.
Download Ledger Live for your operating system (Windows, macOS, Linux) or get the mobile app from official app stores.
Install Ledger Live and follow the initial prompts. Ledger Live guides you through device initialization and app installs for different cryptocurrencies.
Ledger Live is the official companion app where you install coin-specific apps and manage accounts. Always download it from the official Ledger site to avoid malicious imitations.
Step 3 — Initialize your Ledger device
Connect the device to your computer (or pair via Bluetooth for Nano X) and open Ledger Live.
Select Initialize as new device (do not choose “Recover” unless you already own a seed phrase you are restoring).
Choose a PIN when prompted. Use a PIN you can remember but that’s not obvious to others.
Write down the recovery phrase (24 words for most Ledger setups) exactly as shown on the device screen. Confirm the words when prompted.
Critical: Never store your recovery phrase digitally (photos, notes, cloud storage). Anyone who accesses the phrase can control your funds.
Step 4 — Install coin apps and create accounts
Ledger devices use small on-device "apps" for each supported cryptocurrency. In Ledger Live:
Open the Manager and install the apps for the coins you want to use (e.g., Bitcoin, Ethereum).
After installing apps, go to Accounts and add an account for each cryptocurrency.
App storage is limited by the device; uninstalling an app does not remove funds — they remain recoverable with your recovery phrase.
Step 5 — Receive and verify addresses
To receive funds, generate a receiving address in Ledger Live for the relevant account.
Always verify the receiving address displayed in Ledger Live matches the address shown on your device screen before sharing it.
Share the on-device verified address with the sender.
Never skip verification. Malware can modify addresses on your computer; the device display is the canonical source.
Step 6 — Sending funds securely
Create a transaction in Ledger Live by entering the recipient address and amount.
Review transaction details on your computer, then verify all details on your Ledger device screen.
Approve and sign the transaction with the physical buttons on your Ledger device (or via confirmed Bluetooth pairing for Nano X).
Approving transactions on-device ensures the private keys never leave the secure element, preventing remote theft.
Optional — Passphrase / hidden accounts
Advanced users may enable a passphrase for extra privacy. A passphrase combines with the recovery phrase to generate a hidden wallet. Use caution:
If you forget the passphrase, funds in that hidden wallet are irretrievable.
Do not store the passphrase together with the recovery phrase.
Only use passphrase functionality if you fully understand how it works and have secure procedures to store/remember it.
Security best practices
Keep your recovery phrase offline and in a secure, geographically separate location(s) — consider a safe or bank deposit box.
Never share your recovery phrase or PIN. Ledger support will never ask for them.
Only download Ledger Live from ledger.com/start or official app stores.
Be wary of phishing: verify URLs, and treat unsolicited messages about urgent account problems as suspicious.
Consider using a metal seed backup for long-term durability against fire or water damage.
Troubleshooting common issues
Device not detected: Try a different USB cable or port, disable USB hubs, update Ledger Live, and restart the computer.
Firmware update fails: Retry via Ledger Live; if persistent, consult official support from Ledger.
Forgot PIN: Reset the device and restore from your recovery phrase (this erases the device state but your funds remain recoverable via the phrase).
Lost seed phrase: If the phrase is lost and you still have funds on the device, transfer funds to a new wallet immediately and make a secure backup of the new seed.
Maintenance and routine checks
Periodically open Ledger Live to check for firmware updates and app updates.
Test restores with a spare device (or a trusted service) using small amounts — this verifies that your backup works without risking large sums.
Keep firmware and Ledger Live up to date to benefit from security fixes and compatibility improvements.
Final checklist before you go
Recovery phrase written down accurately and stored offline.
PIN set and tested; do not use trivially guessable PINs.
Ledger Live installed from the official site and devices/apps up to date.
One or more small test transactions completed successfully.
Device purchased from a trusted source and packaging checked for tampering.
When these tasks are complete you can safely use your Ledger device to store and manage your cryptocurrencies with far stronger protection than a software-only wallet.
